Vital Records History of Michigan’s Vital Records 1812 Michigan’s territorial legislature gave the Supreme Court jurisdiction over divorces in the territory. 1836 The legislature established a Court of Chancery and transferred jurisdiction over divorces from the Supreme Court. This court held sessions in the circuit courts already established.
